One of top accountancy firms in the world hacked in NY

By October 12, 2017November 15th, 2018News

Deloitte, one of the largest accountancy firms in the world with their global headquarters in New York recently announced that they had been hacked. According to the Guardian, the hackers gained access to confidential emails and plans of some of its blue-chip clients. While specific company names have not been revealed they apparently included household names as well as the US government.

The hacker gained entry through the firm’s email server with an administrator’s account that gave them full access. Unfortunately, there had not been two-factor authentication used to secure this major account, something that could have potentially thwarted this attempt.

At this time it is still a little unclear what exactly has been compromised. If hackers did in fact get access to all of Deloitte’s emails their clients could have a range of potential problems. Corporate strategies, sensitive information and credentials, even emails of top executives would be exposed for additional phishing scams to be directed at them.
